The upcoming undisputed super middleweight championship fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford on September 13th in Las Vegas already carries significant stakes. Adding further incentive, Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority and president of the Saudi Boxing Federation, has announced a bonus for securing a knockout victory.
This announcement was made during the kickoff press conference for the Alvarez-Crawford bout in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Alalshikh has consistently expressed his desire to eliminate passive fights where one boxer avoids engagement, referring to them as `Tom & Jerry fights.` To counter this style, he is implementing a knockout bonus, starting with the Alvarez-Crawford fight, for future events he promotes.
“We won`t see those types of fights anymore,” Alalshikh stated. “This fight, and our future fights, will have a bonus for a KO.”
Alalshikh did not provide specific details regarding the bonus amount or whether it would extend to the undercard fights. This approach is similar to the performance bonuses awarded by UFC CEO Dana White, who is a promotional partner with Alalshikh.
From the fighters` perspective, both Alvarez and Crawford were respectful but firm in their confidence for the upcoming clash, which is set to air on Netflix.
“I`ll find a way to win, no matter how I need to fight,” said Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs). “I won`t let anyone dictate my style after doing this my whole life. I won`t be evading. But I will be making contact.”
Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) suggested that Crawford wasn`t significantly different from his previous opponents and made it clear he would prevent the former two-division undisputed champion from becoming the only male fighter to achieve undisputed status in three weight classes.
“He isn`t going to defeat me,” Alvarez declared. “Rest assured… I am a victor.”
Crawford has finished 11 of his last 12 opponents via knockout but will be moving up two weight classes, from 154 to 168 pounds, to challenge the renowned Mexican fighter. He is confident not only in maintaining his undefeated record but also in making history by capturing all four major world titles in a record third weight division.
“Those championships are definitely coming back with me,” Crawford stated. “I`m taking them, and there`s nothing you can do about it when fight night arrives.”
