Retired kickboxing icon Andy Souwer, in partnership with New York-based striking coach Jonathan Paul Ruiz, is set to revive his pro-am promotion, the World Kickboxing Series (WKS). The initiative aims to foster the growth of kickboxing worldwide by supporting aspiring and professional fighters with sponsorship opportunities and dedicated athletic development programs. WKS previously held events in 2023.
WKS intends to expand its reach across all continents, specifically targeting regions less traditionally associated with kickboxing, such as the Middle East, Africa, and Oceania. To facilitate talent development and representation, each region will have a prominent figure from the sport serving as its team captain. Announced captains include Gabriel Varga (Canada), Duane Ludwig (United States), Andy Souwer (Europe), Regian Eersel (South America), Lerdsila (Asia), and Anissa Meksen (France).
Souwer`s vision for WKS is to establish a structured kickboxing ecosystem, mirroring the tiered competition levels seen in boxing, encompassing national, regional, continental, and ultimately, global championships under one umbrella.
WKS has scheduled three events for the first half of 2025. The first is the US Grand Prix, taking place in Brooklyn, New York, from March 28th to 30th. This event is notable for hosting bouts across various levels, from children and novices up to professional fighters, and will be streamed live for free on the WKS YouTube channel.
Winners from the US Grand Prix will earn the opportunity to represent the United States at the WKS “Grand Finale,” planned for St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands at a date yet to be announced.
Another event is planned for May 22nd at Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok, where WKS Asia Team Captain Lerdsila will be present. Following this, the South American Grand Prix will be held from July 4th to 6th in Rio de Janeiro, presided over by WKS South America Team Captain Regian Eersel.
