K-1 Super Bantamweight champion Akihiro Kaneko will not face charges following an investigation into assault and extortion allegations. The Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office announced their decision on March 26, citing a lack of sufficient evidence to pursue an indictment.
Kaneko, the current K-1 World Grand Prix Super Bantamweight titleholder, had been accused of physically assaulting a training partner at a gym in Chiba City’s Chuo Ward. The Chiba Prefectural Police referred the case to prosecutors twice, in October 2023 and January 2024. However, prosecutors ultimately determined there was insufficient substantiated evidence to proceed with an indictment.
The case garnered significant attention due to the serious nature of the accusations, which included claims of prolonged physical and mental abuse against his training partner. While the legal process has concluded with no charges filed, the repercussions of these allegations continue to impact the fighter`s career.
As of now, neither Kaneko nor his representatives have issued a public statement regarding the prosecutor`s decision.
