The Vancouver Canucks have officially locked in a key piece of their future, announcing the signing of forward Braeden Cootes to a three-year, entry-level contract. This agreement formalizes the relationship between the club and the highly-touted prospect, who was selected 15th overall in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. At just 18 years old, Cootes represents a significant investment in the Canucks` long-term plans.

For any young player, signing an entry-level contract is a pivotal moment, signaling the transition from amateur status to the cusp of professional hockey. For a first-round pick like Cootes, it’s a standard procedure, yes, but one that underscores the team`s belief in his potential. Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin commented on the signing, highlighting Cootes` performance since the draft. “Braeden showed really well at our development camp, and we are happy to get him under contract,” Allvin stated. He praised the young forward`s competitive drive and observed his clear “desire to be one of the best players on the ice,” noting his “hard work and attention to detail.” The organization`s focus is now squarely on aiding his continued improvement.

Before putting pen to paper on his first NHL contract, Cootes honed his skills in the Western Hockey League (WHL) over three seasons with the Seattle Thunderbirds. His 2024-25 campaign was particularly noteworthy, where he demonstrated significant offensive growth. He led the Thunderbirds in both assists with 37 and total points with 63, while also netting 26 goals in 60 games. Beyond the offensive numbers, his leadership was recognized, culminating in him taking over the team`s captaincy midway through the season – an early sign of the character teams covet. His major junior career totals with Seattle stand at 40 goals and 59 assists across 131 contests.

Cootes` resume isn`t limited to the WHL; he has also proudly worn the Maple Leaf on the international stage multiple times. His international experience includes participation in the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, a gold medal at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, and another gold at the 2025 U18 World Championships, where he served as team captain. Performing and leading under pressure in these tournaments provides valuable experience and further validates his potential.

Listed at five-foot-11 and 183 pounds, the Sherwood Park, Alberta native brings a combination of skill, intelligence, and proven leadership to the Canucks organization. While an entry-level contract doesn`t guarantee an immediate NHL roster spot – a fact well-known in the world of prospect development – it solidifies his path within the team`s system and represents the next crucial step on his journey toward potentially becoming a contributing member of the Vancouver Canucks. The club is clearly optimistic about what Cootes can become.
