GLORY Underground marked the promotion`s first event held in the United States since GLORY 72 back in 2019. This latest installment took place at the Betr Warehouse in Miami, Florida. However, the event was unfortunately overshadowed by a noticeable lack of professionalism.
The production quality suffered significantly. While Joe Valtellini returned to the commentary booth, his contributions were frequently overshadowed by two influencers linked to Jake Paul, who were seen consuming beer during the broadcast. The absence of Tim Hughes, whose presence usually adds a sense of authenticity, was also felt.
An atmosphere of awkwardness was further amplified by a sparse audience of approximately 200 people, many of whom appeared largely disengaged. Adding to the issues, at times even the referee seemed uncertain about the ruleset, which further undermined the event`s credibility and arguably impacted the flow of some fights.
The live chat on YouTube was filled with criticism from fans, who pointed out the amateurish commentary and subpar overall presentation, noting that it fell far short of the high standards GLORY audiences have come to expect. Following the success of the recent `Last Heavyweight Standing` event, the target audience for `Underground` remains unclear.
Kwasi and Beztati Fight to Another Draw
Despite the broadcast issues, the main event fighters delivered. The rematch between Chico Kwasi and Tyjani Beztati unfolded in a manner strikingly similar to their initial encounter. Both fighters began cautiously, feeling each other out in the first round. The second round, like the first time they met, saw an increase in action, and Kwasi managed to score a knockdown on Beztati, mirroring their previous fight.
The subsequent two rounds were closely contested. An emboldened Beztati attempted to rally and appeared to potentially win the third and fourth rounds. The final round was a true barn burner, with both competitors exchanging heavy blows. Kwasi seemingly dropped Beztati again, but it was controversially ruled a slip, and the fighters immediately resumed trading punches until the final bell.
Shockingly, the fight was ruled a draw once again. Neither fighter was pleased with the outcome, with Beztati stating in his post-fight interview that he believed he had won four rounds, much to the visible frustration of the champion, Kwasi.
Boapeah Dominates Latescu
Michael Boapeah extended his impressive win streak to five fights since his loss to middleweight champion Donovan Wisse. Boapeah proceeded to systematically dismantle Stefan Latescu, particularly targeting his calf from the opening round. Early on, he outworked Latescu with his boxing and effectively used his right knee to the Romanian`s body. The second round proved disastrous for Latescu as Boapeah consistently landed strikes to his opponent`s calf at will.
Each blow caused Latescu to visibly recoil in pain, leading to three knockdowns within that single round. After the final knockdown, Latescu appeared to surrender, acknowledging he was finished. This loss marks Latescu`s fourth consecutive defeat in the promotion, representing an unfortunate downturn for a fighter once recognized as GLORY`s newcomer of the year.
Boapeah`s dominant performance here likely elevates his standing in the light heavyweight title picture, moving him closer to challenging the division`s top contenders.
