Jaime Munguia Tests Positive for Banned Substance

Former junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia`s victory over Bruno Surace on May 4 could be annulled after a post-fight drug test revealed a banned substance.

A representative from Munguia`s team informed Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN KnockOut on Thursday that they received notification from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) on Wednesday night regarding the presence of exogenous testosterone metabolites in Sample A and that they will issue an official response. The representative added that they will soon request that Sample B be opened.

Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) has 10 days to request analysis of Sample B to determine the exogenous origin of the testosterone metabolites. If the analysis of Sample B also reveals the presence of the banned substance, the former champion`s points victory could be overturned (declared a “no contest”), and he could face a suspension ranging from six months to one year.

Munguia`s promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, has not yet responded to ESPN`s request for comment.

Munguia avenged a surprising sixth-round knockout loss to Surace in December by securing a clear points victory in the rematch earlier this month at the Riyadh Season boxing event, which was headlined by Canelo Alvarez`s fight against William Scull.
