The Montreal Canadiens have moved to solidify their goaltending depth, announcing Sunday the signing of goaltender Jakub Dobes to a two-year contract extension. The deal is structured with an average annual value (AAV) of $965,000, representing a vote of confidence in the young netminder`s progression.

Dobes, originally a fifth-round selection (136th overall) by the Canadiens in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, has steadily climbed the organizational ladder. At 24 years old, this new contract marks a significant step following his entry-level deal, positioning him as a key part of the team`s plans in net, at least in the immediate future.

The Czech goaltender earned this extension largely based on his performance, particularly during his first significant exposure to the NHL level this past season (2024-2025). In 16 regular-season appearances for the Canadiens, Dobes posted a .909 save percentage and a 2.74 goals-against average, coupled with a 7-4-3 record. While the numbers are solid rather than spectacular, they demonstrate competence at the highest level. He even saw limited action during the postseason, playing in three games, gaining valuable experience despite an .891 SV% and 2.91 GAA in that brief playoff stint.

Prior to making his NHL debut, Dobes honed his skills in the American Hockey League. Across 65 games in the AHL, he maintained a .906 save percentage and a 2.82 goals-against average, establishing himself as a capable starter at the minor league level and proving he could handle a significant workload.

A two-year contract at $965,000 AAV is a standard bridge deal for a player who has shown potential but hasn`t yet cemented himself as a full-time NHL starter. For the Canadiens, it`s a low-risk investment that secures organizational depth and provides competition in the crease. For Dobes, it’s essentially a two-year audition to prove he belongs in the NHL night in and night out. It`s the classic “show us what you`ve got” contract, but with the security of two years rather than one, which is a nice nod to his development path.

This signing ensures the Canadiens continue to cultivate their goaltending pipeline. Dobes joins the fold for two more seasons, ready to compete for playing time, provide reliable backup service, or anchor the team`s AHL affiliate while being ready to be called upon. It`s a sensible move that keeps options open and rewards a player who has put in the work since being drafted.
