Keyshawn Davis’ fight with Edwin De Los Santos called off

Top Rank announced on Friday that the boxing match scheduled between Keyshawn Davis and Edwin De Los Santos has been cancelled. The decision came after Davis failed to meet the required weight earlier in the day.

The bout was originally set to take place on Saturday evening at Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia, Davis`s hometown.

Davis was expected to put his WBO lightweight title on the line against De Los Santos in the main event. However, Davis weighed in at 139.3 pounds, significantly over the 135-pound weight limit by 4.3 pounds. As a result of the missed weight, Davis was stripped of his title, making only De Los Santos eligible to claim the championship had the fight proceeded.

According to Sampson Lewkowicz, De Los Santos`s promoter, his fighter took exception to the substantial weight miss. This led to extensive negotiations between both parties in an attempt to salvage the main event. Ultimately, the fight was called off when an agreement could not be reached.

“We renegotiated 10 pounds, plus money, but we concluded that Davis never tried to make weight,” Lewkowicz told Salvador Rodriguez. “He came dancing to the scale. I didn`t want what happened to [Devin] Haney and [Ryan] Garcia to happen. We canceled the fight.”

Lewkowicz`s comments referenced the situation where Ryan Garcia missed weight before his April 2024 fight with Devin Haney. Garcia won that fight by decision, but the result was later changed to a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

“The most important thing is Edwin,” Lewkowicz added. “I hope he sets an example.”

Following this cancellation, Abdullah Mason`s lightweight clash with Jeremia Nakathila has been promoted to the main event slot for Saturday`s card. Additionally, Keyshawn`s older brother, Kelvin Davis, has been moved into the co-main event against Nahir Albright in a junior lightweight contest.
