Rankings Shakeup: Volkanovski Back at #1, Silva Breaks into Top 10

With Ilia Topuria vacating the top spot, the featherweight division`s highest ranking became available for a returning contender.

At UFC 314, Alexander Volkanovski, a former champion, reclaimed his title with a dominant five-round display against a tough Diego Lopes. This victory propelled Volkanovski back to the number one global featherweight ranking. Ilia Topuria, having stated his intention to fight only at lightweight (155 lbs), has been removed from the featherweight list entirely.

This marks a return to familiarity for many fight fans, as Volkanovski previously held the top position for over four years until his loss to Topuria. His return opens up exciting possibilities, with numerous fresh challengers waiting, such as the undefeated Movsar Evloev and other standout fighters who achieved significant victories recently.

Also making a significant impact at UFC 314 was Jean Silva. He improved his perfect UFC record to 5-0 with an impressive win over Bryce Mitchell, dominating the stand-up exchanges before securing a second-round ninja choke submission. Silva`s spectacular performance undoubtedly generated considerable excitement.

Meanwhile, Lerone Murphy secured his place in the top 10 for the first time with a decisive victory over Josh Emmett at UFC Vegas 105. While perhaps not always delivering `Performance of the Night` contenders, Murphy remains undefeated professionally and boasts an eight-fight winning streak in the UFC following his debut draw. His consistent success positions him as a potential title challenger in the near future.

Regardless of his next opponent, Volkanovski has undeniably regained control of the division, a comeback that appeared improbable after his loss to Topuria just over a year ago. His return to the top is a compelling narrative, and he is surely motivated to continue competing and silencing his critics.
