Former Wales international fly-half Rhys Patchell is embarking on a new chapter in his rugby career, stepping into a coaching role with Welsh region the Dragons. The 32-year-old, who recently concluded a stint with Japanese side Green Rockets, has joined the Rodney Parade setup as a part-time kicking coach.

In a move that adds an intriguing layer to his transition, Patchell has not yet formally announced his retirement from playing. This allows him to balance his nascent coaching responsibilities with the possibility – however remote it might currently seem – of still taking to the field himself. He is scheduled to work with the Dragons players twice a week, focusing specifically on goal-kicking and tactical kicking skills.

Patchell brings a wealth of experience to his new position. A seasoned playmaker, he represented Welsh sides Cardiff and the Scarlets with distinction over many years. His international career saw him earn 22 caps for Wales, contributing 82 points and featuring in the 2019 Rugby World Cup squad. Having performed under the intense pressure of Test match rugby and the demands of professional club kicking, his insights will undoubtedly be valuable to the Dragons` squad.

For a player known for his technical ability with the boot, moving into a specialist kicking coach role seems a natural progression. While many players announce their retirement before transitioning fully into coaching, Patchell`s approach of easing into the coaching environment while keeping his playing options theoretically open is perhaps a pragmatic way to manage the shift. Or perhaps, a subtle acknowledgment that the lure of a drop goal from the touchline is hard to entirely shake off.

The Dragons will hope Patchell`s expertise can help hone the skills of their current crop of kickers, potentially improving a crucial facet of their game. His recent experience in different rugby environments, including Super Rugby with the Highlanders and the Japanese league, could also offer fresh perspectives to the region`s coaching team.

This appointment marks a significant step for Patchell towards a post-playing career, even if the final whistle on his time as a player hasn`t been officially blown just yet. It`s an interesting blend of roles and one that will be watched with interest by Welsh rugby observers.
