Despite being widely recognized as one of the most dominant wrestlers and grapplers in UFC history, Islam Makhachev has surprisingly been advised to focus on improving that very aspect of his skillset.
This unexpected recommendation comes after last week`s significant announcement that Makhachev has vacated his lightweight title to pursue a welterweight championship fight against Jack Della Maddalena.
Leading up to the UFC 315 main event, Makhachev had stated his next career move would hinge on the outcome of that fight. Della Maddalena subsequently delivered a dominant performance, securing the welterweight belt.
Following the victory, Makhachev quickly issued a challenging message to Della Maddalena, immediately igniting what promises to be an engaging rivalry.
Makhachev Urged to Refine Wrestling Before Della Maddalena Bout
As of now, an official date for the welterweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and the new champion has not been set. However, rumors are circulating that the highly anticipated bout could headline the UFC`s upcoming event in Abu Dhabi, scheduled for October.
A particularly noteworthy aspect of Della Maddalena`s win over Belal Muhammad was his remarkable takedown defense. He successfully defended against the majority of Muhammad`s attempts, showcasing an impressive grappling resistance.
This strong defensive showing has prompted Daniel Cormier, Makhachev`s longtime friend and training partner, to suggest that Islam concentrate on his wrestling, even given his established dominance in the sport.
In a recent episode of `Good Guy/Bad Guy`, Cormier explained, “Islam vs Jack is gonna be a great fight, especially seeing Jack defend the takedowns in the way that he did.” He also noted that Islam “struggled a little to take down Dustin Poirier.”
Cormier elaborated, “He didn’t take him down as easily as he had taken down other guys, so I think for Makhachev he needs to really lock in on getting that wrestling ready to fight a guy in Jack Della Maddalena who showed great takedown defense and, man, this dude’s got some good boxing, especially when you’re in tight with him.”
Makhachev`s Striking Ability Highlighted by Volkanovski Knockout
Although Della Maddalena is often perceived to hold the striking advantage in this potential matchup, Makhachev has consistently demonstrated elite-level striking throughout his time in the UFC.
This was powerfully illustrated in his rematch against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294, where he secured a brutal first-round head kick knockout, earning widespread recognition for his striking prowess.
Della Maddalena`s striking style leans heavily on his boxing skills, whereas Makhachev effectively incorporates kicks into his attacks and utilizes a formidable Thai clinch.
