Legendary voice-over stars don’t come any more iconic than the man best known for playing Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise; Peter Cullen. That is about to be put beyond doubt as the veteran star is being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at this year’s event.

Having worked in the industry for more than 50 years, Cullen has been a part of some of the most iconic cartoons of not just one, but multiple generations. In the 1980s, Cullen first lent his voice to Optimus Prime in the Transformers animated series, a role that he would continue to play for five decades. Although others have stepped into the role from time to time, when it comes to any big Transformers project, if Cullen is available, he will be there. In response to the award announcement, Cullen said (via UPI.com):

“Are you sure they have the right Cullen? I spell it C-u-l-l-E-n. Seriously though, I am humbled to be recognized by the Academy with this great honor.”

Cullen’s approach to voicing Optimus Prime was influenced by his older brother, Larry Cullen, a Vietnam War veteran. He has frequently spoke at length about the credit he gives to Larry for inspiring the gentle yet powerful voice of Prime, shaping a character who became a father figure and hero to many. This personal connection added depth and authenticity to his portrayal, contributing significantly to the character’s enduring popularity.

Cullen most recently played the leader of the Autobots in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. This means the actor has starred in every big screen, live-action movie since Michael Bay first brought the franchise to cinemas in 2007, as well as numerous video games, and chances are, he is not done with the role yet. Speaking in a featurette released to coincide with Rise of the Beasts, Cullen said of his most recent time out as Prime:

“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has the same ingredients that were there at the beginning. There’s that integrity, there’s a dignity, there’s courage. It’s an honor to be able to do this character. I’ve talked to a lot of people who grew up with Transformers, and I don’t take them for granted. I love you guys.”

Peter Cullen Is Much More Than Just Optimus Prime.

Although Peter Cullen is best known for his work with the Transformers franchise, he is also one of the most prolific voice actors of all time, standing alongside other industry legends of decades gone by, such as his good friend Frank Welker and the biggest voice-over icon of all time, Mel Blanc.

He has lent his voice to a multitude of characters across various animated projects including Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, The Book of Pooh, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dungeons and Dragons, The Smurfs, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?, Adventures of the Gummi Bears and Muppet Babies among many more. Most recently, he joined the cast of Invincible, playing Great Thaedus in the second season of the superhero series.

However, for the dozens of roles Cullen has played, his multiple appearances as Optimus Prime will continue to be his greatest legacy, and one that is a big part of his latest accolade. Cullen will receive his award at the Children & Family Emmy Awards on December 17.
