After the game, Mayfield was seen walking carefully to the locker room. During the Monday press conference, Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles mentioned that he anticipates Mayfield will recover and be okay for the upcoming Sunday.

During a two-point conversion attempt by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to narrow the score by eight points, Baker Mayfield threw a pass to Chris Godwin in the endzone. However, as Mayfield released the ball, he was forcefully hit in the chest by Mathieu, a hit that Mayfield expected.

Mayfield explained, “It was one of those late-scramble plays, last-second throwing the ball to Chris (Godwin), obviously. They’re going to take hits. It’s a physical team,” according to ESPN. Mayfield also mentioned that X-rays on his ribs came back negative, indicating no serious injury.

Despite injuring his ribs in the game against the New Orleans Saints, signs suggest that Baker Mayfield will likely play in Week 18. In the Saints game, Mayfield faced challenges, going 22-for-33 with 309 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Although Mayfield is expected to be healthy for Week 18, Buccaneers lineman Tristan Wirfs expressed annoyance with the late hits on his quarterback by the Saints. Wirfs said, “Yeah, I am. 93 (Shepherd) did it the first game. Tyrann Mathieu did it this game. And he’s chirping at the refs saying he didn’t. But that’s part of football.”

Tampa Bay is scheduled to face the Carolina Panthers in Week 18 on Sunday, January 7. A victory could secure the NFC South for the Buccaneers.
