Action movie icon Jason Statham has explained why he has no interest in pursuing a superhero role, despite the genre still being the most dominant one in Hollywood and blockbuster filmmaking. Speaking with Variety, The Stath declared that he doesn’t have much of an appetite for a “cape and tights,” and reveals his plans to continue to wave the flag for “old-school” 80s action movies. Something that he has excelled at for years.

“I don’t have a big appetite for a costume, with cape and tights. I like old-school ’80s movies. I was inspired by people like Stallone and Arnold. And even before those guys, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, and Eastwood. I just couldn’t see any of those guys putting on a cape, and a mask and going around on wires.”

Since the takeover of comic book and superhero movies, Jason Statham has been rumored and suggested for several different roles that would see him sport a garish costume. From the Marvel superhero Union Jack to the violent vigilante The Punisher, Statham would no doubt suit several roles from the worlds of DC, Marvel, and more.

The role that Statham has most often been put forward for by fans is that of the Marvel supervillain Bullseye. A highly skilled, psychopathic assassin, and the mortal enemy of Daredevil, Bullseye has made his made to screen twice now, once portrayed by Colin Farrell in the 2003 movie and then again by Wilson Bethel in the Netflix Daredevil series.

But, reading Statham’s words here, it’s unlikely comic book fans will ever see the action star join the MCU or DC ranks.

Jason Statham Will Next Lead the Action Movie The Beekeeper

Statham will continue his action hero legacy in style with the upcoming The Beekeeper. Directed by David Ayer and written by Kurt Wimmer, The Beekeeper stars Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Ali Asghar Shah, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons alongside Statham. Check out the official synopsis and trailer for The Beekeeper below:

“In The Beekeeper, one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.””

Statham cannot wait for audiences to see him once again ply his trade in The Beekeeper, describing it as “cool, full of heart and excitement” and teasing the mythology at the movie’s center.

“I can’t wait for people to see that. It’s really sophisticated and cool, full of heart and excitement. It’s a great film. The result is obviously yet to be seen, but I’m really, really proud of the movie…The whole movie escalates in terms of the action. And it goes through an incredible, great crescendo. The whole world [of the film] has a mythology of the ‘beekeeping’ world. If we were fortunate enough to make a sequel, we have a whole world that we can dive into.”

The Beekeeper is scheduled to be released in theaters by Amazon MGM Studios on January 12, 2024.
