Our Flag Means Death won audiences from the get go as the ragtag group of pirates and their fearless, albeit naive, captain Stede Bonnet are probably the most endearing group of wacky criminals that you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting. Indeed, one of the best things about the show is the interesting cast of characters that we meet throughout the story.
However, the sheer number of characters can make it rather tricky to keep track of everyone. This is why we’ve put together a thorough roundup of the different characters on the show. Here’s a cast and character guide for Our Flag Means Death.
Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet
Stede Bonnet is a wealthy Barbados-born landowner who abandons everything to become a pirate. The reason for this is simple: he’s incredibly bored with his ordinary life. This is why he purchases his ship the Revenge, hires a crew, and sets off on a grand pirate adventure despite knowing close to nothing about what it actually takes to be a pirate and live out on the high seas.
Many of youmay recognize Rhys Darby from his stint on Flight of the Conchords wherein he played the band’s manager. He’s also had roles in films and shows such as Yes Man, The Boat That Rocked, and the upcoming sci-fi comedyRelax I’m from the Future.
Nathan Foad as Lucius Spriggs
Comedian Nathan Foad plays Lucius on the show. He’s one of the pirates that Stede Bonnet hired to be a part of his crew. Lucius’ main job on the crew is to document the adventures of Bonnet and the crew of the Revenge. Our Flag Means Death is Foad’s first major role.
Samba Schutte as Roach
Samba Schutte plays Roach on the show. Roach was hired by Bonnet to be the cook and surgeon of the Revenge. Roach is a big fan of the legendary pirate Blackbeard. Our Flag Means Death is Schutte’s first major acting role. However, he has done voice acting working for various video games like Forspoken, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and Gigantosaurus: The Game.
Matthew Maher as Black Pete
Black Pete is one of the only pirates on the Revenge that actually has any experience being out at sea. Because he’s a seasoned pirate, he often spins tales of his exploits for the other crew members to enjoy. Black Pete is played by Matthew Maher. Maher has appeared in many films and shows. He’s had roles in Hello Tomorrow!, Captain Marvel, and The Kill Room. Maher recently also played Peter Moore, the person responsible for the design of the iconic Air Jordan 1 sneaker, in the film Air.
Joel Fry as Frenchie
Surprisingly, Frenchie is the only one who really doubts Stede Bonnet’s ability to take charge of a crew and be a bona fide pirate. Frenchie is best known for his singing and lute-playing skills as he helps entertain the crew while they’re out at sea. Frenchie is played by Joel Fry. Fry has been in a slew of different films such as 10,000 BC, Yesterday, and Cruella.
Samson Kayo as Oluwande Boodhari
While being kind-hearted might not be an advantage when living the pirate life, it still needs to be said that Oluwande is one of the nicest and most well-respected members of Stede’s crew. Despite Bonnet’s incompetence, Oluwande seems to genuinely look out for him and helps keep him out of harm’s way.
Samson Kayo is a British actor who’s been in the business since 2013. He’s had a number of roles in both film and television. Kayo is best known for his work on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Bloods, and Truth Seekers.
Vico Ortiz as Jim Jimenez
Vico Ortiz plays the mysterious character Jim on the show. Jim joins Bonnet’s crew along with Oluwande. Despite getting on this ship as a stowaway, Jim would eventually become a full-fledged member of the Revenge’s crew. Ortiz is best known for their portrayal of Tova in the show The Sex Lives of College Girls.
Leslie Jones as Spanish Jackie
Spanish Jackie is a recurring character on the show that’s best known for her no-nonsense attitude. Aside from owning a popular bar in the Republic of Pirates, she’s best known for keeping cutting the noses off of people who cross her.
Leslie Jonesis an American comedian and actor. She’s best known for her time on the iconic comedy show Saturday Night Live where she was a regular cast member from 2014 until she departed the show in 2019. She’s also had acting roles in films and shows such as Ghostbusters, Coming2America, and The Angry Birds Movie 2.
Taika Waititi as Edward Teach
Edward Teach, who is best known as Blackbeard, is one of the most infamous pirates in human history. He and his legendary ship the Queen Anne’s Revenge terrorized the seas with his motley crew of ruthless pirates. The show’s version of Blackbeard is a little different, as Our Flag Means Death hopes to explore the character even more.
Taika Waititi is an award-winning director who is best known for his films. Waititi has directed several movies including Jojo Rabbit, What We Do in the Shadows, and Thor Ragnarok. As an actor, he’s had roles in films and shows such as Lightyear, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, and The Mandalorian.
Minnie Driver as Anne Bonny
With a new season comes new pirates. Anne Bonny is a significant addition to the show as she is one of the very few female pirates recorded in history. The real-life Anne Bonny is known for her unmatched ferocity as she will not hesitate to kill anyone who opposes her.
Minnie Driver is a talented actor who has appeared in both film and television. She’s best known for her work on titles such as The Witcher: Blood Origin, The Lesser Dead, and Speechless.
Ruibo Qian as Zheng Yi Sao
Another new pirate we meet in the show’s second season is Zhen Yi Sao. Despite initially being introduced as an ordinary soup merchant named Susan, it’s eventually revealed that Susan is actually the pirate queen Zheng Yi Sao. Yi Sao, like Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach, is based on a real pirate. The show’s version of Yi Sao has her as the captain of the all-female pirate crew the Red Flag.
Ruibo Qianplays the role of the pirate queen on the show. Qian has appeared in a number of shows and movies throughout her career. She’s best known for her role in Mozart in the Jungle. Qian has also had minor roles in shows like Evil, Orange Is the New Black, and the sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror.
