Summary

  • Dogpool, a canine version of Deadpool with healing abilities and a penchant for fourth-wall breaking, will make an appearance in the upcoming movie.
  • With the SAG-AFTRA strike resolved, the stars of Deadpool 3 can finally discuss the film more openly, although Marvel’s secrecy will likely limit spoilers.

Deadpool 3 is back in production, and after previously sharing the first official image from the upcoming Marvel movie, Ryan Reynolds has snuck a new Deadpool 3 shot into his end of year montage.

The new image shows Reynolds in full Deadpool costume on the set of 2024’s only MCU theatrical release. For fans, this is just another teasing reminder of what is coming in the summer, and continues to build both expectation and hype for the movie.

The previous new image arrived at the same time as a number of leaked set images have given a look at some potential spoilers for the threequel, including returning X-Men characters. However, when it comes to official shots, the party really started with Dogpool.

This first official snap of Dogpool is the latest image to be shared by the canine’s own Instagram account recently. Dogpool is set to bring another level of hilarity to the Deadpool franchise and the MCU next year, and shared a new image on its own Instagram account to show how things are going. There is something to be said about a dog that can just let everything hang out, although exactly what should be said is another debate entirely.

Known for his irreverent humor, fourth-wall-breaking sarcasm, and a frequent need for violence, Deadpool became an instant fan favorite with the release of the 2016 movie. Following the release of a sequel in 2018, the merger between Disney and Fox put the antics of Reynolds’ anti-hero on hold. However, when the official announcement of Deadpool 3 arrived, it came with a bang thanks to the reveal that Hugh Jackman would be reprising his role as Wolverine in the threequel – and that is only the tip of the iceberg.

Now via X, Reynolds has revealed another of the surprise additions to what it quickly turning into a movie that will bridge the gap between many Marvel universes. In his usual comical style, Reynolds announced Dogpool’s upcoming arrival and poked fun at the “nightmare” the Disney merchandising department will have in the coming months.

Who is Dogpool?

Marvel Comics

There are many reasons why Deadpool is going to be one of those rare Marvel movies that can possibly live up to its own hype. While there are many rumors about which older stars of the Fox universe could be making an appearance in Deadpool 3, such as Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, the introduction of Dogpool to the MCU is one that doesn’t seem to have been on many fans’ radars.

Created by writer Victor Gischler and artist Bong Dazo, Dogpool made his debut as part of the Deadpool Corps comic series back in 2010. Much like his human counterpart, Dogpool is essentially a canine version of Deadpool himself, possessing the ability to heal himself, a heightened agility and that all important penchant for fourth-wall breaking that is synonymous with the franchise.

Although Dogpool’s role in the plot is unlikely to be revealed until much closer to the release of the movie, now that both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are at an end, the stars of Deadpool 3 will once again have the luxury of being able to discuss the film in interviews and at red carpet events. Of course, given the secrecy around every Marvel project, we probably shouldn’t expect too many loose lips spilling the beans just yet.

Deadpool 3 is expected to arrive in summer 2024, and it couldn’t come at a better time for the beleaguered Marvel Studios. Having had a mostly disappoint couple of years, with more misses than hits at the box office, Deadpool could well be the unlikely savior of Phase 5 and the Multiverse Saga.
