The Crow Remake First Look Reveals Bill Skarsgård as the Gothic Avenger

We finally have our first look at the long-awaited remake of the supernatural superhero comic book, The Crow. Starring It and John Wick: Chapter 4 star Bill Skarsgård as the titular antihero on a quest for revenge, several first-look images have been revealed and show the actor in all his tattooed, gothic glory. Bill Skarsgård will lead The Crow remake as Eric Draven, aka The Crow alongside FKA Twigs as Shelly Webster, Eric’s fiancée, whose murder is the catalyst to Draven’s resurrection and revenge. Set to be directed by Rupert Sanders (Ghost in the Shell, Foundation) from a screenplay by Zach Baylin and Will Schneider, the filmmaker has offered some insight into his approach to the comic book adaptation, calling it “a dark romance.”

“What drew me to this was the opportunity to make a dark romance, something that dealt with loss, grief, and the ethereal veil between life and death and reaching through that. Look, I grew up listening to Joy Division and the Cure, and this movie is a bit like a Cure song—the beauty of melancholy.”

The Crow Is Due for Release in June 2024

Created by James O’Barr, The Crow began life as a comic book and revolves around a young man named Eric, who is forced to watch his fiancée, Shelly, murdered by a gang of street thugs after their car breaks down. Eric is then shot and later dies in hospital. But he is soon resurrected by a mysterious crow and seeks vengeance on the murderers, stalking and killing them while dealing with the loss of Shelly.

Several iterations of The Crow have since been brought to screens, beginning with the original 1994 effort starring Brandon Lee, which was tragically marred with the actor’s death after Lee was fatally wounded by a prop gun during filming. The franchise has spawned several sequels, including The Crow: City of Angels starring Vincent Pérez and The Crow: Wicked Prayer with Edward Furlong. A reboot has been in production for quite some time, with the project first entering development back in 2008. Since then, the likes of Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, and Jason Momoa have been tapped for the title role.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Rupert Sanders says the reboot will be something of a tribute to the late Brandon Lee, with the filmmaker adding that Skarsgård “feels like he is a successor” to Lee’s take on the iconic character.

“Obviously, it was a terrible tragedy, and it’s definitely something that we’ve always had in mind through the making of the film. Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow and I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film. There’s a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that.”
