Hazbin Hotel has become a big hit for Prime Video. Originating a short pilot on YouTube in 2019, the series has finally arrived on Prime Video. The series follows Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen), the princess of Hell, as she sets about fulfilling her seemingly impossible dream of opening a hotel called “Hazbin Hotel,” which aims to rehabilitate sinner demons who can “check out of hell” and ascend to heaven as she is upset by the yearly purge of souls by angels.

She is joined by her girlfriend Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz), first patron and pornographic film actor Angel Dust (Blake Roman), reluctant bartender Husk (Keith David), demented housekeeper Niffty (Kimeko Glenn), and the sinister and mysterious Alastor (Amir Talai), a radio demon. The series has become a massive hit thanks to its incredible soundtrack that features 16 incredible original songs that cover multiple genres of music.

Season one consists of eight 25-minute episodes (not counting the pilot on YouTube), so that means viewers who get hooked on the series will certainly be craving more. There is the spin-off series Helluva Boss, which airs on YouTube and is in the same universe as the series but with different characters. The central idea at the heart of Hazin Hotel is whether a soul can be redeemed. That is also the overriding idea of The Good Place, which, like Hazbin Hotel, explores the afterlife through the lens of everyday living with a focus on the bureaucracy that is the afterlife.

Both Hazbin Hotel and The Good Place are comedic takes on the afterlife and show a humorous side to heaven and hell (although The Good Place notably never specifics heaven or hell and just goes with the neutral terms “The Good” and “Bad Place”). Based on the popular DC Comics character of the same name, Harley Quinn expands on the character and explores her trying to define herself after her breakup from a toxic relationship with the Joker while also developing new friendships with a crew and a growing romantic relationship with fellow DC villain, Poison Ivy.

Raunchy But Heartfelt LGBTQ+ Romance

Harley Quinn and Ivy’s relationship has a lot in common with the romance seen between Charlie and Vaggie in Hazbin Hotel, although it is a much slower progression as it takes a few seasons of build-up. The series features the same mix of great visual gags with pop culture references and character-centric jokes that Hazbin Hotel has, including plenty of fun R-rated spins on the DC Comics concept. Both series also explore the idea of redemption. Harley Quinn and her crew of criminals are overlooked by Gotham City, and while some fall back into evil ways, others find lives for themselves outside of villainy and discover maybe they weren’t always meant to be evil. Season 4’s arc of Harley Quinn trying to be a hero while the rest of the DC Universe looks down upon her certainly plays well with how the angels in Heaven see the demons in hell at Hazbin Hotel. Lucifer Morningstar has a great comedic supporting role in Hazbin Hotel, with Broadway star Jeremy Jordan lending his voice to the character. While a lot of Western media depicts Lucifer as the ultimate evil, Hazbin Hotel builds off the idea of him as God’s most beautiful angel and a fallen artist. Fans, then, should certainly check out Lucifer. Loosely based on the Vertigo Comic of the same name, the series follows Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) as he runs a club in Los Angeles and eventually undergoes a life change when he teams up with a human detective, Chloe Decker (Lauren German).

A Softer Side to the Devil

It is safe to say the Devil has never looked better than when played by Tom Ellis. This is a charming take on the fallen angel, but one with a great deal of pain that the series delves more into as each series expands the relationship with his other angel siblings and even his father, God himself. The series stars Jane Levy as a software engineer who, after an MRI scan gone bad during an earthquake, discovers she can people’s innermost thoughts that take the form of musical numbers. While on the surface, the lighthearted live-action series and the adult-oriented animated series have little in common with one another outside of being a musical, there is still plenty of overlap.

Songs Give Insight Into Character

One of the great elements of a musical is how it allows the audience to get insight into a character’s thoughts or feelings and allows for greater emotional bonding between two characters. Both Hazbin Hotel and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist use these musical numbers to give quick insight into characters without on-the-nose dialogue exchanges and also allow for an easy shortcut to get characters to bond. Hazbin Hotel‘s “Loser, Baby” connects Husk and Angel Dust more quickly over the limited screen time than more dialogue scenes would have. While Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist features all covers to make a jukebox musical, it still makes for an entertaining watch and often leaves for some clever spins on classic songs. She-Ra: The Princess of Power (2018 – 2020)

Hazbin Hotel has received praise for its cast of characters and the diverse sexual spectrum they all reside on. Certainly, the biggest is the sweet romantic pairing between Charlie and Vaggie, one that is very similar to the relationship between She-Ra and the Princesses of Powersbetween She-Ra and the villain Catra. Audiences get to see these two foes’ relationships blossom over time, and despite coming from different worlds, they are drawn to one another, just like Charlie and Vaggie.

Star-Crossed Lovers

Both Hazbin and Hotel and She-Ra and the Princesses of Powers have incredibly colorful and simple art designs that make them eye-catching spectacles to watch. Yet it is the romantic pairing of one sweet, overly optimistic girl with a more stern, serious counterpart that should make fans of one series fall in love with the other. Stream on Netflix.

Supernatural (2005 – 2020)

Supernatural has 15 seasons worth of television, so there is plenty of material to watch while you wait for season 2 of Hazbin Hotel. Supernatural started out as a simple monster of the week show with Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, respectively) going across the country and taking on monsters from folklore. As the series went on, however, the series expanded its mythologies, and in addition to demons, the duo found themselves battling angels and even God himself.

War Against Heaven

While Supernatural does paint in broad strokes, with most to all demons in the series being bad, much like Hazbin Hotel, it also paints the angels in a more negative light than most audiences might be used to. Both the angels and God himself are Old Testament versions of the material, bloodthirsty and war-like. They possess a great deal of power and are willing to use it however they see fit, regardless of who it hurts. However, Invader Zim did gain a cult following among older kids, teenagers, and college kids. The series was known for being gross, weird, and sometimes very unsettling with its dark imagery and has been cited by Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano, aka VivziePop, has cited Invader Zim as a major influence on her art style, and that is clear from the designs of Hazbin Hotel.

Her character, Vaggie, even speaks in a manner similar to Rosa Diaz, although at a slightly higher register, which is a good mix between Rosa Diaz’s voice and her real-life speaking voice. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an exceptionally funny show, one that has a wide array of comedic styles that entice any audience member.

Systems and People Can Change

While on the surface, a series about police, an institution known to punish criminals and has often been accused of not rehabilitating others, seems like the opposite of Hazbin Hotel, the series do overlap. The final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine was written following massive waves of public backlashes to police departments following the murder of George Floyd. Brooklyn Nine-Nine looks to examine the cops of the series, what the police mean as an institution, and if it is even right to make a comedy series about them anymore. Some characters leave the police force because they can’t be part of a system they feel is corrupted, while others strive to improve it from the inside because they see themselves as willing to stand up for what is right. Hazbin Hotel is certainly frank, honest, and many times extremely vulgar in its discussion, which oftentimes leads to some of the best jokes and character moments. Fans of that humor are certainly likely to enjoy Big Mouth, a series that also has a frank and honest conversation about puberty that kids go through to an extremely exaggerated effect that is personified by hormone monsters. Like Hazbin Hotel, the monsters feature some truly great character design.

An All-Star Cast

Both Big Mouth and Hazbin Hotel get a lot of great comedy out of explicitly sexual humor with colorful character designs. While Hazbin Hotel is an all-star lineup of musical theater actors, Big Mouth features the same level of talent but from the world of comedy. Names like John Mulaney, Nick Kroll, Maya Rudolph, Pamela Aldon, Jordan Peele, Jason Mantzoukas, Ayo Edebiri, Jenny Slate, and many more. When it comes to musical television, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend might be one of the best in the past decade. The series was created, written, and directed by Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna and stars Bloom in the lead role as Rebecca Bunch, a lawyer who moves from New York City to California to pursue her ex-boyfriend from high school summer camp that obviously, does not go according to the plan. While the series was never a hit with general audiences, as it often got low ratings, it was a critical smash and won several awards over its four-season run, including multiple Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a Critics Choice Award.

Great Songs That Tackle Mental Health

Both Hazbin Hotel and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend feature incredible original songs, but despite their comedic exterior, both series have their fair share of dramatic moments. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend tackled a lot of difficult topics like mental health, depression, and female sexuality. Hazbin Hotel also features plenty of heavy topics under its cartoonish designs and catchy songs, notably in “Poison,” where Angel Dust sings about his sexually abusive relationships and self-destructive tendencies that he recognizes could kill him and might be his only escape. Good Omens (2019 – Present)

The final two shows on this list are series from Prime Video, the same streamer that disrupts Hazbin Hotel. The first up is Good Omens, another theological comedy series. The series follows the demon Crowley (David Tennant) and the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), longtime acquaintances who have grown accustomed to each other’s company and find themselves involved in world-ending canopies between heaven and hell that they must get involved in. The original season aired in 2019 and proved popular enough to warrant a second season, which debuted in 2023. the final season has now been ordered, but no premiere date has been announced, so fans of Hazbin Hotel and Good Omens can share in their anticipation for another season.

Heaven and Hell Fall In Love

Obviously, both Good Omens and Hazbin Hotel look at the nature of creation, heaven, and hell, and these big, grand cosmic theological questions with a comedic spin by visualizing them in tangible, relatable human drama. Good Omens also features a queer romance that blossoms between Crowley and Aziraphale, a complement to the one between Vaggie and Charlie. Prime Video’s biggest adult animated series is Invincible, which is about to return from its hiatus to air the second part of season two later in March, so fans of Hazbin Hotel can perfectly jump on board if they haven’t. The series is adapted from the hit Image Comic of the same name and follows superhero Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who fights crime as Invincible. The series pulls from iconic superhero origins and worlds that audiences have grown accustomed to but has done so by adding its own unique spin on it.

Feels Like a Grown-Up Saturday Morning Cartoon

Both Hazbin Hotel and Invincible are drawn to resemble classic Saturday morning cartoons, which contrast with their R-rated jokes and subject matter. Yet both series, at their hearts, have very simple stories that are relatable to everyone and use mature content warnings to tackle deeper themes. They both perfectly capture the aesthetic and tone of a classic genre of stories that a kid might have grown up watching and now feels like the natural grown-up version of it, but not in a shallow way. While they certainly embrace their gore and violence, there is an emotional maturity that they have not forgotten.
